When planning your trip to Siem Reap, you will choose between different temple routes. Neak Pean is a central feature of the Grand Circuit. This route takes you further out than the Small Circuit, offering a quieter look at King Jayavarman VII's late 12th-century creations.

Which tour circuit includes Neak Pean?

Neak Pean is a standard stop on the Angkor Grand Circuit.

Most Grand Circuit tours group Neak Pean with Preah Khan, Ta Som, East Mebon, and Pre Rup. You explore these temples in a loop starting from Siem Reap. Because Neak Pean sits in the center of the Jayatataka Baray reservoir, it offers a distinct contrast to the other stone ruins on this route.

How do you travel the Grand Circuit?

You can hire a tuk-tuk or an air-conditioned car from Siem Reap.

A tuk-tuk takes about 45 minutes to reach the area and costs $19 to $25 for the day. A private car or taxi takes 40 minutes and costs $30 to $40 daily. Cars provide relief from the intense heat and humidity between temple stops.

What are the best Grand Circuit tours?

Several guided tours cover the Grand Circuit and include Neak Pean.

You can book private or small-group tours that provide a licensed guide and transportation. Many tours last 4 to 8 hours. Some options add distant temples like Banteay Srei before returning to the main Grand Circuit loop. grand circuit private tour

Do you need a special ticket for the Grand Circuit?

No, the standard Angkor Pass covers all temples on the Grand Circuit.

You do not need a separate ticket for Neak Pean. The Angkor Pass costs $37 for a 1-day ticket in 2026. You can also buy a 3-day pass for $62 or a 7-day pass for $72 through Angkor Enterprise. Bring a physical or digital copy of your pass on the tour.

What should you wear on a Grand Circuit tour?

You must wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees at all times.

The Angkor park enforces a strict dress code. Guards will turn you away if you wear tank tops, shorts above the knee, or sheer clothing. Neak Pean also requires a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella. The long wooden boardwalk crossing the baray has absolutely no shade.

How much time should you spend at Neak Pean?

Plan for about 40 minutes to visit Neak Pean during your circuit tour.

The walk across the wooden causeway takes 10 minutes each way. Once at the island, you need 15 minutes to view the central pool and shrine, plus a few minutes to observe the peripheral ponds. The temple area is compact since visitors cannot step onto the central island.

When is the best time of year to do the Grand Circuit?

The wet season from June to November is the best time to visit Neak Pean.

During these months, the massive Jayatataka Baray and the temple's central pools fill with water. This completes the island illusion intended by King Jayavarman VII. If you visit in the hot, dry season, the surrounding reservoir dries up significantly.
