Neak Pean sits on an artificial island in the center of the Jayatataka Baray. To reach the temple, visitors must cross the surrounding water or marshland on foot. The bridge provides excellent views, but it completely exposes you to the intense Cambodian sun.
What is the Neak Pean wooden walkway?
The walkway is a wooden boardwalk built directly over the Jayatataka Baray reservoir.
This bridge spans the distance from the drop-off point to the central island. During the wet season, you cross over a reflective lake. In the dry season, the baray turns into a marshland dotted with skeletal, submerged trees.
How long does it take to walk to Neak Pean?
The walk across the wooden causeway takes about 10 minutes in each direction.
You need a total of 20 minutes of walking time just to cross the bridge and return. Plan to spend an additional 15 minutes viewing the central pool and the peripheral ponds once you reach the island.

What should you bring for the boardwalk crossing?
You need sun protection, a reusable water bottle, and comfortable walking shoes with good grip.
There are no vendors or shaded areas on the island or the bridge. Bring a wide-brimmed hat or an umbrella to block the sun. Apply high SPF sunscreen before leaving your vehicle.
| Item | Reason to Pack |
|---|---|
| Umbrella or Hat | No shade on the 10-minute boardwalk crossing |
| Reusable Water Bottle | No vendors or water sources on the island |
| Walking Shoes | Good grip needed for the wooden causeway |
| Insect Repellent | Standing marsh water attracts insects |
Is there shade on the way to Neak Pean?
No, there is absolutely no shade on the wooden boardwalk or the island perimeter.
The path is fully exposed to the heat. If you book a tuk-tuk, ask your driver for cold water before you start the walk. If you hire an air-conditioned car, cool down in the vehicle immediately after your return.

Can you walk onto the central temple island?
No, visitors are not allowed on the central island itself.
You must view the 70-meter square pool and the central sanctuary from the surrounding perimeter platforms. The boardwalk leads you to the edge of the complex, but crossing onto the unrestored ruins is strictly prohibited.

How does the water level change the walk?
The water level alters the scenery, with the baray flooding fully between June and November.
Visiting during the wet season completes the illusion of an island temple floating on a lake. Carry a lightweight rain jacket or poncho during these months. In the dry season, the reservoir dries up significantly.

Questions travellers ask
Are there toilets on the Neak Pean island?
No. There are no facilities, shade, or vendors on the island itself.
What kind of shoes do I need for the boardwalk?
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip. You will walk on a wooden causeway and some dirt paths around the perimeter.
How do you get to the start of the walkway?
Hire a tuk-tuk or private car from Siem Reap to reach the site entrance. The drive to the drop-off point takes 40 to 45 minutes.
